The Basics

Options Trading Basics

Call Option (CE)

Gives the buyer the right to buy the underlying at the strike price. Call buyers profit when the market rises above strike + premium.

Put Option (PE)

Gives the buyer the right to sell the underlying at the strike. Put buyers profit when the market falls below strike - premium.

Option Buyer

Pays the premium. Risk is capped to the premium paid. Reward potential is large (unlimited for CE).

Option Seller (Writer)

Receives the premium. Max profit is the premium. Risk can be very large — margin requirements are high.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the current lot size for Nifty and BankNifty?

Nifty 50 lot size is 25, BankNifty is 15, and Sensex is 10 (as per SEBI revisions effective 2024-25). NSE periodically revises lot sizes based on contract value rules — always verify on the exchange before trading.

How is breakeven calculated for options?

For a Call buyer, breakeven = Strike + Premium. For a Put buyer, breakeven = Strike - Premium. For sellers, the same levels apply but with inverted P&L direction.

Why is the max loss "unlimited" for option sellers?

A Call seller has unlimited loss because the underlying can theoretically rise without bound. A Put seller faces large loss if the stock falls to zero. Sellers are compensated via premium income but must post significant margin.

Does this calculator include brokerage and taxes?

No — this calculator shows the gross P&L at expiry before charges. For total cost (brokerage, STT, exchange fees, GST, stamp duty), use the StoxMark Brokerage Calculator.
